Biography:

Although an important Scottish Tory politician and philanthropist, the Baronet Sir John Stirling Maxwell was also very interested in the arts. He was a founder member of the National Trust for Scotland in 1931, and was an authority on architecture, the importance of the environment, and a noted art collector. As is evident by this watercolour, Maxwell was also an amateur artist who took a keen interest in the landscapes around him.
