Alasdair Grant TAYLOR 1938 - 2007

Biography

Born in Ross-shire, Alasdair Grant Taylor studied art at the Glasgow School of Art. Both a painter and a sculptor, Taylor was particularly influenced by the COBRA avant-garde movement, active from 1949-1952. The COBRA artists advocated freedom of colour and form, and drew inspiration from primitive art forms and children's drawings. The influence of these artists' violent brushwork and distorted, semi abstract figurative works is clear with a work such as Taylor's Slaughterhouse Manager, which boldly depicts the head of his subject in thickly applied strokes.

Alongside the painted works, Taylor also worked in collage and created sculptures from driftwood he collected near his home on the Clyde Firth.
