Sir Frank SHORT 1857 - 1945

Biography

Short was painter and engraver who studied art in London, and who won gold medals at the Paris Salon for his engraving work. He was an influential art teacher who taught from 1891 to 1924, when he retired from the Royal College of Art.

From 1910-39 he was the president of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers (RE), and for this work received his knighthood. His outdoor plates were drawn on the spot, before the scene.

He visited the Solway coast in the early 1890s to undertake the series of etchings held by Gracefield and which capture the mood of the working day of the fishermen and drovers.
