Norman McBEATH -
BiographyNorman McBeath is a printmaker and independent photographer based in Edinburgh. He is a member of Edinburgh Printmakers, the venue for his latest solo exhibition -"Evidence' for which the writer AL Kennedy has written an introduction. He has had prints shown in the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh as well as in shows touring in Canada, Lithuania and Britain, including the International Miniature Print exhibition organised by Gracefield.
His photography focuses on people and places. The National Portrait Galleries in London and Edinburgh have a number of his portraits in their permanent collections. He has recently had work showing in the Leica Gallery in New York, the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and a solo exhibition of black and white night photographs of Oxford at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, with an introduction by the writer Jeanette Winterson.
He says of his work:
"I work exclusively with photopolymer photogravures - a recently developed printing technique which allows me to apply my skills as a photographer to fine art print making.
One of the main attractions of this particular technique is the chance to produce original prints that are genuinely distinctive - demonstrating tremendous tonal range, high resolution and subtlety of definition. I have found considerable scope for experiment with this technique and therefore the opportunity to produce work of originality and quality.
Light and form have always fascinated me which is one of the reasons I work mainly in monochrome. I love the way these two, seemingly simple, elements play on one another to configure our complex visual world. I am drawn to subjects where shape, texture and geometry are strong components - in particular where such elements provide the framework for a broader, more subtle theme."
Photopolymer prints use a light sensitive photographic film are adhered to a metal plate (copper, steel or zinc). A transparency with a photographic (or drawn image) is then expose a in a light box to the metal plate which is etched/developed with soda ash to create the intaglio surface.
