Neil MacPHERSON Born 1954 -

Biography

Since completing his artistic education at the Glasgow School of Art and Jordanhill College of Education in the late 1970s, Neil MacPherson has exhibited widely across the UK, North America and Europe, and has won numerous awards. MacPherson's paintings are commonly figurative, characterised by a bold and surreal attitude to colour and composition. The Botanist appears at first glance a straightforward portrait, however the omission of a name or any defining characteristic besides career tells us this is not the case. The inclusion of a chapel in the distance as well as the expanse of sky and sea also leads us to question every aspect of the work, and leaves us with a striking, ambiguous impression of the painting.
