William Ewart LOCKHART 1846 - 1900

Biography

Born in Eaglesfield in 1846, William Ewart Lockhart received training at the Royal Scottish Academy from age fourteen, and was submitting work to their annual exhibition by the next year. In 1889-90, he was commissioned by Queen Victoria to paint the celebration of her jubilee in Westminster Abbey. Although not strikingly innovative for his time, Lockhart's work is typical of the Victorian artistic spirit, with its restrained traditional overtones clearly visible in this portrait. These tendencies are however softened through the warmth of colour and casual gestures of the sitter who loosely grasps his letter and eyeglasses.
