Biography

Born Newtyle, near Dundee, William Lamond worked for many years on the Caledonian Railway. He developed a talent for portrait painting at which he made a reputation, but later returned to landscapes and, especially, seascapes. His vigorously painted harbour scenes are often effective, and his lack of formal training resulted in a direct and powerful style. He died at his home in Dundee, aged 67.
