David FOGGIE 1878 - 1948

Biography

Best known as a figure and portrait painter, The Blue Jug strikingly depicts David Foggie's emphasis on accurate drawing skills, which characterised his teaching methods at the Edinburgh College of Art for over 20 years. Prior to his teaching career, Foggie studied abroad at the Antwerp Academy in Belgium, and pursued courses in Florence and Paris before returning to his native Scotland in 1904. In 1930 he was elected a full member of the Royal Scottish Academy, and became its Secretary in 1932. The Blue Jug exudes a quiet modesty that characterises his other works, and displays the accomplished skills that undoubtedly aided and informed him as a tutor of Life Drawing.
