Ronald Ossory DUNLOP 1894 - 1973

Biography

In addition to painting landscapes, seascapes, portraits and still life, Ronald Ossory Dunlop was also an author. After studying art at the Manchester School of Art and in Paris, he went on to exhibit widely across the UK. Born to artistic and literary minded painters, it was therefore of no surprise that Dunlop worked in both of these fields. His works achieved great acclaim in his time, and in 1950 he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy.

The portrait here neatly suggests the two aspects that guided his career - the artistic and the literary. The energetic brushstrokes and the vivid orange shirt, little interrupted by shadow or formal requirements immediately create a striking image. However the combination of this with the lyrical title, Girl in Hat (the hat's on the side of my head) introduce a playful tone, as if the sitter has been jesting with the artist.
